The Dark Night Of The Soul

I cannot remember how many times exactly, but there were at least a handful of moments in my life where I felt as if I couldn’t take another breath. My suffering had become so immense that even crying was no longer adequate to express the anguish I put myself in.

I say, ‘put myself in’ because looking back it is clear that the suffering was all my own creation. Yet, back then it seemed that my very world had come crashing down and left me with nothing. The heaviness on my chest and heart was so crushing that my mind flitted back and forth from one fearful thought to another.

I had exhausted all avenues of coping, distractions, justifications, lies, respite, and solace. There was nothing left to save me from myself and so, all that I was left with was, me.

I suffered because I believed my thoughts. I questioned, are they in fact real? What is “real?”

What happens when everything collapses? When the gig is up?

You may have come to this place yourself. When reality seems like it’s lost all sense of meaning. When we question even our own existence. When we continually ask ‘why’ until we are left with nothing.

This classic Dark Night of the Soul has been experienced by many. We all feel it; deep inside we already know the ultimate truth.

“Who am I?,” “What am I?,” “What is I?”

In this void we can shed all falsehoods until only one truth remains.

We are not the labels we give to ourselves: daughter, son, wife, husband, colleague, friend, mother, father or lover. We are not young, old, black, white, brown, male or female.

We are not even happy or sad.

These are all simply identifications we give ourselves to play with for awhile.

We are in fact no-thing.

“WEAR THE WORLD LIKE A LOOSE GARMENT.” – SAINT FRANCIS OF ASSISI

It is true, we are no-thing, but we are also everything. We are timeless, boundless, infinite Awareness. We are Consciousness. We are Life.

We are and always have been the Silent Witness; the Observer.

When you shed all falsehood and realize your truth, how can you continue believing in the small self that you once thought you were? How can you maintain the illusory self when you have now come face to face with the faceless?

I like the way Eckhart Tolle, describes the Dark Night of the Soul experience:

“…Really what has collapsed then is the whole conceptual framework for your life, the meaning that your mind had given it. So that results in a dark place.  But people have gone into that, and then there is the possibility that you emerge out of that into a transformed state of consciousness. Life has meaning again, but it’s no longer a conceptual meaning that you can necessarily explain.  Quite often it’s from there that people awaken out of their conceptual sense of reality, which has collapsed.

They awaken into something deeper, which is no longer based on concepts in your mind.  A deeper sense of purpose or connectedness with a greater life that is not dependent on explanations or anything conceptual any longer.  It’s a kind of re-birth. The dark night of the soul is a kind of death that you die. What dies is the egoic sense of self. Of course, death is always painful, but nothing real has actually died there – only an illusory identity.” from: https://www.eckharttolle.com/eckhart-on-the-dark-night-of-the-soul/

The great irony in life is that we need to continually lose ourselves to find ourselves. As we walk the path towards greater self-awareness we shed ourselves like layers of an onion. Continually peeling back falsehoods, lies, and ignorance.

“THE GREAT IRONY IN LIFE IS THAT WE NEED TO CONTINUALLY LOSE OURSELVES TO FIND OUR SELVES.”

I liken the awakening process to climbing a ladder. We climb our rung until we’ve learned our lessons and are ready to reach higher and pull ourselves up to reach a yet different vantage point.

We climb when we are ready to let go of the old. We change our perspectives and shift our awareness to a more inclusive state of consciousness. Previous contradictions of reality suddenly make sense because we have reached higher perception levels that can integrate reality with greater clarity.

Our previous self was blind but now things become obvious. We have grown.

“WHAT YOU SEEK IS SEEKING YOU.” – RUMI

And so the inner journey continues, climbing higher, reaching further; shedding what no longer serves us and becoming lighter and brighter.

To know that we are not our past, our beliefs, our thoughts, our worries, is such a profound lifting of an ancient burden. A heavy sigh of relief overcomes us as we relish the invitation of the void. In this space we come to truly know that we are no body, no one, no thing, no where, in no time.

And what next? Laughing at the play of consciousness, of life, of what we perceive as real. It can all finally be let go.

We are infinite conscious awareness with no form, no identity, no ultimate purpose. In this realization, we free ourselves and finally start to LIVE.

Life is miraculous, incredible, profound, giving, and compassionate. Letting the false self die over and over again is what the process of enlightenment is all about.

Step bravely into the void and embrace the darkness; for the truth shall set you free.

“ENLIGHTENMENT HAPPENS QUIETLY, LIKE THE BLOSSOMING OF A FLOWER.” – SADHGURU

Have you experienced a Dark Night of the Soul yet?

Keep climbin’.

How To Manifest Quickly With Mind Movies

Remember when you played as a kid and your imagination would run wild?

Remember seeing toys come to life with names, histories, personalities, hopes and dreams?

Remember how these inanimate companions had the power to comfort, console, and even heal?

Who do you think was doing the comforting, consoling, and healing?

We project our inner world onto our external world yet we seem to have forgotten that all of this is simply child’s play.

Imagination is Creation – always has been and always will be. Nothing has really changed. No matter our age, we continue to project our inner world and interpret this as reality.

THE WHOLE WORLD IS SIMPLY MY STORY, PROJECTED BACK TO ME ON THE SCREEN OF MY OWN PERCEPTION. ALL OF IT. – BYRON KATIE

We have forgotten that we are the master’s of our reality. We have forgotten that we create the rules.

One really spectacular way to get back in our ‘imagination’ groove is to consciously create mind movies. Everyone is familiar with the fun creative tool that dream boards offer. Well, mind movies are dream boards on steroids. They are a very potent way to be in alignment with your overall vision and stay motivated on goals.

Check out Nicolas Do’s Youtube channel for inspiration:

Whether we realize it or not, we are already engaged in mind movies all day long. The issue is that our mind movies are unconscious or not very helpful for us.

By purposely creating, watching and listening to your personal mind movie daily you are reprogramming your mind which feeds imagination and thus results in creation and manifestation. It’s that simple.

How To Use Mind Movies To Create Your Future

If you want to create more peace, abundance, increased clarity, or happiness then creating a personal mind movie with music and images that inspire you is the first step. Be sure to include affirmations that are in alignment to your goal. Images should definitely create a visceral reaction and evoke emotions in order to bring your future self into this present moment.

Remember, your body doesn’t know the difference between a current or future event. It is simply following your thoughts in the NOW. So, use this to your advantage and create a mind movie that motivates you, thrills you, and inspires you into creating this reality for yourself now. Everytime you watch your mind movie you are training your body to live this future self now! Afterall, you are watching a movie of you!

Watching your mind movie can be used alongside your daily meditation practice (if you have one). When we meditate we move from beta brain waves to alpha and theta (sometimes even gamma). These altered states of consciousness are beyond the analytical/conscious mind. If we meditate first and then watch our mind movie, our brain is still entrained to a higher vibration and taking in the images, sounds, and emotions from your movie will be more impactful to your subconscious mind where most of our programming takes place.

Meditating and watching your mind movie in the morning, just after waking, and then again before bed is a good way to help bring all these positive qualities into your life. Just like anything in life, consistency is key. It is best to commit to at least 45 days of watching your mind movie twice daily in order to see results.

Mind Movies Tips and Tricks

Change does not happen overnight. If we don’t pay attention to subtle changes in our thoughts or environment we might think that nothing is happening to us, so it is important to pay attention during this time of growth and expansion.

A great sign that that your mind movie is beginning to take shape is the nature of your thoughts have changed. You may find yourself having ‘baby mind movies’ aka as daydreams. These new daydreams are a direct result of the new wiring, firing and thinking in our brain. These daydreams serve as the imagination fuel for creation and manifestation to bring thought into reality. Never underestimate the power of imagination!

To help bring your Mind Movie to life it is helpful to journal our thoughts, feelings and emotions of any new discoveries, serendipities or chance encounters with interesting new people or experiences. These are subtle signs that we are slowly bringing into our world the changes that we seek. Pay attention – change is happening! There are no coincidences.

How To Use A Mind Movie To Consciously Create A New You:

1) Create or find a Mind Movie that is alignment to your future goals and new Self

2) Commit to watching your Mind Move for at least 45 days, 2x’s per day

3) Watch your Mind Movie in the morning and in the evening

4) Get a journal and keep notes of any new thoughts, feelings, emotions that you are experiencing

5) Notice any serendipitous coincidences, experiences, or people that may unexpectedly come into your life to help you be in alignment with your vision

6) Celebrate small wins and be kind to yourself as you slowly change from one paradigm of reality to a new and improved one

Bringing It All Together

All this imaginary work is vital to establishing a new paradigm of reality. Being able to actively visualize and feel a new future-self living your dream life brings the courage and necessary energy to build this new reality into physical manifestation.

Repeated imagination of a given thought, scenario, encounter, or experience will eventually bring it into your current life.

Paramahansa Yogananda and The Book That Started It All

I’ve always been someone that has asked a lot of questions. I’m also the kind of person that if someone answers my question, I will still investigate it to make sure it is experientially true for me. I don’t know why I’m like this, I’ve just always been very inquisitive.

When I was 15 years old I came upon a green book lying around my house. It happened to be a library copy of Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda. Being curious, I opened the book and started to read. I was immediately taken in.

Levitating Yogis and The Prospect of Enlightenment

This book is more than just an autobiography; it is a man’s epic journey of spiritual evolution painted in such a lively way it is as if you are right there beside him. The book is filled with beautiful stories and adventures detailing Yogananda’s childhood through adulthood as he describes in vivid detail encounters with supernatural Saints, Yogis, and Masters. As I studied page after page something deep within me resonated. I found myself crying after every few pages. What brings tears like this to a young girl’s eyes? I knew nothing of Indian mysticism, meditation, gurus, or yogi’s yet something in this book was powerful enough to affect me to my very core.

Bhaduri Mahasaya The Levitating Saint

Bhaduri Mahasaya The Levitating Saint, Chapter 7 of Autobiography of a Yogi

It didn’t take long to finish the book and soon my mind was racing with curious tales of levitating yogis, astral dimensions, Masters that could manifest a physical body out of thin air and Saints that consciously left their body on their own terms (mahasamadhi). But beyond all these mystical feats I was interested in something far greater. My mind reeled with the newly impregnated awareness of attaining Self Realization aka Enlightenment in this lifetime.

“It must be possible”, I thought. Yogananda wouldn’t have gone to all this trouble to bring Kriya Yoga to the West without there being a reason. My young mind was excited and eager to get started on my own epic mystical journey. Following the simple prompts from the book, I sat in easy pose, closed my eyes and focused my gaze between my eyebrows. Slowly I watched my breath and sat wondering, “Is this meditation? Am I doing it already?” Being 15 years old with no other prior programming, I didn’t know if meditation was easy or difficult. I just knew that Yogananda did it and if he could, then I could.

From Doubtful Mind To Samadhi – The Progressive States of Conscious Evolution

Fairly quickly I managed to relax my body/mind enough to where I started to feel a curious vibration surrounding my body. It had a pleasant nature and was gentle and warm. At that time this familiar vibratory feeling surrounded my entire body. My mind was relaxed and at ease. I didn’t know what this was but somehow I trusted it and allowed myself to go deeper and deeper into it.

As I continued in my meditations I noticed that they weren’t always the same. Sometimes I would cry as if I was releasing eons of pent up karmic impressions built up over lifetimes. It was a sorrow that hit so deep that it often left my body weak and shaking. Though scary as it sounds, I was always left feeling significantly lighter and somehow less burdened. Did I ask myself what was happening to me? Certainly. Though what came out during my meditations was certainly alarming I decided it must be a catharsis of some kind and I soldiered on. Interestingly, it was never more than I could handle and it was always followed by such warmth and love. Intuitively I just knew that what was occurring was for my highest good, and so I carried on.

Other times my meditations merged into various states of samadhi consciousness where ‘I’ was beautifully absent; “I” rose beyond the body/mind organism and I remained in a detached witnessing state of conscious awareness. There was no deciding how my meditations would go; sometimes they were cathartic and released a lot of emotion, sometimes I had vivid visions, sometimes I sensed energy both in and around me, and sometimes I felt as if every cell in my body was bursting with orgasmic ecstasy. I was along for the ride and I was happy to not be in the driver’s seat. I willingly let existence take the lead as I knew that an element of trust and letting go was inherent when one is walking the spiritual path.

I continued with my meditation in this way for many years. Soon I too had mystical cosmic experiences that were too crazy to believe – yet they are true; I can experientially vouch for them. These siddhis always came spontaneously and unannounced and served as a tool to help me break through the limitations of my mind. We are not what we think we are. Physical reality is not what it appears to be. Perhaps a more interesting consequence to meditation is the spontaneous ‘downloading’ of information in packets of data that come unannounced but always at the right time. When your mind becomes more purified accessing information from the universe becomes effortless and automatic.

The Outer Results Of a Meditative Mind

More importantly I began to change outwardly. People started to notice a quiet calm I exuded. My emotions were no longer high spikes of uncontrollable energy. I became more intuitive and highly observant of my surroundings. My sensitivity to people, places and things had increased exponentially and I soon lost desire for materials, relationships, and even ego-satisfying accolades. At the same time, my aversions also disappeared and I found myself willingly forgiving  and letting go of past trauma, tragedy, and suffering. I intuitively understood through compassionate empathy that everyone is doing the best that they can and no one truly wants to suffer. Through this deep compassion I was able to bear witness to other’s pain and even spend moments with the actively dying. This compassionate act of simply being with another in a very simple way helped in their transition as well as my own healing. I learned that the continuing expansion of our conscious awareness allows us to remain equanimous to all life experiences.

As one continues in their meditation practice the mind becomes less fragmented, chaotic and impulsive. We learn to tame this wild animal and control it instead of it controlling us. The ability to do this is directly related to the true purpose of meditation; to shed the thick layers of identification while progressively revealing one’s true nature. We are not our physical body, mind, thoughts, memories, desires and aversions. If we are not these accumulations then we come to experientially know that the body/mind is a miraculous tool that can be used to explore creation.

As we slowly develop and expand our conscious awareness we also become capable of harnessing more power/energy. Our body/mind vibrates on a much higher frequency and this also has the profound ability to affect physical reality much faster and with greater ease than in a limited low vibratory state. That is why many masters make sadhaks wait to be initiated in many systems and cultures. Energy is energy and one must be mature enough to handle power in a way that benefits instead of desecrates.

When The Student Is Ready The Teacher Will Come

And now, my exploration into consciousness continues. It is a beautiful journey and continues to surprise me with the many new miracles and mysteries revealed to me on a daily basis. I am now under the guidance of my guru which has exponentially increased my efforts beyond words. At first my meditations were quite explosive with spontaneous kriyas that occurred as the karmic load was being released from my egoic structure. However, as the energy settled and my mind/body adjusted to the higher frequencies pulsing through me everyday my quality of consciousness has elevated to a state of vibrant joy, bliss, and a deep peace that can no longer be shaken. I am forever grateful to all the benevolent beings that have crossed my path both incarnate and disincarnate. They have all served to further my conscious expansion and evolution.

Life is truly beautiful, wonderous and magical when your perspective rises high enough to see everything from a distance. You realize life isn’t so serious and what ‘you’ think you are is just another part of the whole. Laughing, singing, dancing and spontaneous expression of joy is an everyday experience for me and though I keep my body/mind focused in the here and now, every now and then I allow myself to look back to those early days of conscious exploration and discovery. It was a very sweet time full of adventure, courage, compassion, and above all understanding; the understanding that we are so much more than what we think we are.

No Rules, No Expectations, Interested But Detached

My young mind was unburdened with previous programs of what meditation is, how to do it, why one does it, what happens when you do it, what technique is best, what time is best, what position is best, empty stomach or full stomach, mantra or no mantra, in front of shrine or on bedroom carpet, etc. etc. I couldn’t care less about all these ‘rules’ because it simply never occurred to me. I just sat with no expectations. When things did start to happen I remained interested but detached. In this way my meditation practice evolved over time and of course my perceptions of life and understanding of myself also evolved.

Stay Curious, Open To Possibilities, Go Within To Get Beyond, Transformation in Unpredictable Ways

It is vitally important to stay curious as you embark on your spiritual journey. Masters, sages and teachers have always said, “Be like a child; fresh, new, inquisitive”. The reason they say this is because they know how limiting our minds can be when we enter into something with preconceived ideas. Only we can limit ourselves. Staying curious and open to possibilities puts you in the best position to receive whatever it is that you need to experience. Meditation is going within to get beyond your current ‘you’. Understand that meditation is the process of disintegration of the ego and this transformative process occurs in unpredictable ways. Stay present and allow what needs to happen while knowing that everything is happening for your best and highest good.

Trust, Be Willing To Be Less In Order To Become More, Be Courageous

As we shed our egoic limitations through meditation we may come upon some unpleasant emotions in order to process and let go. All spiritual aspirants have one thing in common, they have an insatiable thirst to know their true nature and willingly surrender their personal will in order to become more. If you are willing to go within, feel it, process it, and get beyond it you will evolve consciously at a very intense rate. Although we all see meditators as serene and peaceful they have all had to fight their inner demons to experience the ‘dark night of the soul’. Spiritual warriors embody the word ‘courageous’ because transformation takes a great deal of perseverance, effort, and discipline.

What Is Happiness?

When I was much younger I used to think that once I had xyz, I’d be happy. I’d work hard towards attaining whatever goal I set for myself and the moment I reached it I was elated. Have you experienced this too? Perhaps you’ve lost those last annoying 10 pounds, earned that promotion, bought a new trinket, or made amends with that relationship. The initial feeling of attaining a goal or satisfying a desire fills us with a sense of completion and satisfaction. Unfortunately, this feeling doesn’t last long. Try as we might we can never cling onto this sense of satiety because the nature of life is transient; all things change.

So the cycle goes, desire and the attaining of the desire which leads to a feeling of restlessness and eventually a desire for something new. For many people this is the nature of their reality. Happiness is dependent on external values; identification through objects of desire. This is so prevalent in our society that many Life Coach’s have jumped on the latest popular craze of ‘designing your life’ or ‘living your life purpose’ in hopes of helping client’s discover their true happiness. However, even this strategy is just another method to get more of the same; the never-ending cycle of always wanting more.

The Fleeting Fickleness of Happiness

For, even if you successfully discover your deepest desire and work towards bringing it out into this world, there will be a time where your vision has reached it’s peak and you become restless again. If this weren’t true then all the millionaires and billionaires with yachts, fancy cars, perfect bodies, and millions of followers would be the happiest people on earth and unfortunately we know that they are not. In contrast, we all know of humble people living quiet simple lives that seem to possess an aura of equanimity and balance around them. Are they happy? Or do they embody something else? Something beyond the fleeting fickleness of happiness?

So we must take a greater look into what we call ‘happy’ and whether this ideal is truly what we are aiming for. In order to come to know what lasting happiness is, we must understand what it is not. Abiding happiness cannot be found in external objects whether it is a car, a career, or even a person as we have already pointed out; these things are all transient and do not last. If we do attach our happiness to these things, then we leave ourselves vulnerable to the possibility of losing that object should it disappear.

Beyond The Duality of Happiness and Unhappiness

We live in a world of duality; birth and death, light and dark, high and low, cold and hot, happiness and unhappiness. The physical laws of existence do not make it possible to experience life from only one extreme. We must be malleable enough to traverse all the vicissitudes of life without losing our inner balance. So, what we are really seeking is an inner harmony or tranquility that is not swayed by outside causal factors.

This inner balance or harmony has been referred to by the ancients as ananda or bliss, though it is not the bliss that most Westerners think of. Nanda means contentment and the prefix ‘a’ expresses a strong emphasis so ananda can be translated into ‘great contentment’. This great contentment or bliss is a pleasant way of being and a very stable platform from which to experience life. From this vantage point you can participate in all areas of life and still maintain your inner blissfullness/great contentment/pleasant state of being.

How To Maintain A Blissful State of Consciousness

The ancient mystics refer to reality as Satchitananda; or truth, consciousness and bliss. Sat means true essence, or that which never changes. Chit means consciousness or the knower of experience and ananda, bliss or great contentment. These three make up existence. To access a state of natural peacefulness and joyfulness that is ever present and all abiding one must step beyond the body/mind and access existence. We do this through meditation.

Meditation is similar to the word ‘happiness’ in that it has many definitions depending on who you talk to. Some say meditation is concentrating on one thing, chanting a mantra, thinking a thought or being mentally alert to things around you. However, these are just methods, means and acts of learning to control the mind and it’s constant chatter. True meditation aka dhyana, is not something that you can ‘do’ but is rather a quality that you exude; one becomes meditative when the conditions are right.

Maintaining a blissful state of consciousness is a natural state for all human beings; we need only access it with conscious awareness. Through the practice of daily meditation methods, we slowly rewire our brain to be able to access and maintain this quiet state of high awareness for longer and longer periods. Through daily practice we become meditative, slowly taking over control of the tool we call ‘mind’ rather than having the mind control us. Eventually we are able to take this hard earned peace and joy outside of our sitting meditation practice and into our everyday lives. This meditative quality becomes our everyday state of being; our normal level of consciousness

It is through this disciplined practice that we experience a blissful state of consciousness at all times irrespective of what is happening around us. We rewire our brain, increase our energy, and vibrate at a higher frequency. Life suddenly becomes smooth and effortless. Things we need find their way to us naturally without any great effort on our part. This is because we are in harmony with the greater existence and life itself. This state of being is far beyond the very limited and transient nature of being ‘happy’.
